Needle felting is something artists have been doing for years, yet most of us have never heard of such a thing. When we think of felting, we think of flat felt pieces and hats. From now on - think sculpture; think one-of-a-kind; think bears, animals, fairies, dolls etc. Read on and learn about this newly re-discovered soft-sculpture art. I copied that from somewhere, I loved the way the author described Needle Felting.
Needle Felting- the interlocking and compacting of wool fibres by using pointed, barbed felting needles either by hand or machines. It is usually done when the fibre is dry.
I needle felt all by hand using mostly Corriedale & Merino wools.
I start by making 3 tightly needle felted heads including hairstyle. I then take one head and make the body for the head. I work on each doll individually.
The body just like the head is very tightly needle felted. There is absolutely no stuffing or sewing of the doll involved. I can't even imagine how many pokes per doll.
It takes lots of time. I shape the dolls just like us, they all have buttocks. The clothes hang on them so realistically because of how well they are shaped :o). The female adults have breasts. No doll will ever be anatomically correct. Even though they are fully clothed and the body will never be seen, I poke away until the dolls are tightly formed. The dolls and pups have Chenille frames the dolls legs have double chenille stems, so they are posable. Once the body is done I glue the head to the body and leave it for an hour. I then sketch out the outfit and make the pattern. I hand sew all the dolls clothes. Once the doll is dressed I then make all accessories, such as hats and hand held items, whatever is needed to begin finishing up the doll. The last thing I do is add the eyes and mouth. Once I have two or three of them completed, I then take them downstairs to the computer room to be photographed. I place them in individual boxes to be stored until that wonderful day when they are bought :o) (hopefully).
I then start the process all over again.
The dolls are between 5-9 inches tall and are light weight.
They will come to you very nicely packaged .
I love, love making these dolls as I'm sure you have already figured out :o). I put my all into them and hopefully that comes across.
These dolls are made to be displayed and will last forever if used for that purpose.
I do not recommend them for children. They are fragile in the facial area (eyes & mouth mainly).
Just handle with care.
Warning: They will come with magnets attached to their feet and sometimes backside so they can stand tall on their metal stands.
